Cleft Palate to Confidence: Darwena's Life-Changing Journey with Ten Foundations

Growing up in a remote village in the Philippines, Darwena was one of ten siblings in a close-knit but struggling family. Her father worked long hours as a sugar cone cutter to provide for them. As a young child, she didn’t fully understand the world around her—but by the age of seven, she began to realise that she was different.

Born with a cleft palate, Darwena often felt isolated. Although naturally cheerful, she would sometimes cry alone, confused and saddened by the challenges she faced. Still, she never gave up hope. Every day, she prayed for a better future—for someone who might lend a helping hand.

At ten years old, determined to live a “normal” life, Darwena made the brave decision to start school. She enrolled in Grade 1 (equivalent to Year 2 in the UK) full of determination. But communication was difficult, and her peers struggled to understand her. Teasing and isolation quickly followed, and her confidence collapsed. Eventually, she stopped attending school altogether, retreating into her home and her thoughts.

Despite everything, a small spark of hope remained.

Then, in 2019, her life changed forever.

While helping her grandmother gather firewood, a man on a bicycle approached. Though she couldn’t understand him, a kind neighbour interpreted. The man was inviting Darwena to visit Ten Foundations. That man was Papa Ian.

She didn’t know what to expect—but she went, accompanied by her mother and aunt. That single step marked the beginning of a powerful transformation.

At Ten Foundations, Darwena learned she would receive surgery to repair her cleft palate—and a scholarship to return to education. The operation was a success, and with it came a renewed sense of possibility. Her life began to open up.

Over the next three years, she studied through the ALS (Alternative Learning System) programme and successfully completed her primary education. For the first time in her life, she received a diploma—and even a medal. Today, Darwena is preparing to enter secondary school with confidence and pride.

“Because of Ten Foundations and Papa Ian, I now have the courage to face people and make friends,” she says. “I never thought this life was possible for me.”

Darwena is now dreaming bigger. Inspired by the kindness she received, she hopes to one day help others in need—just as Ten Foundations helped her.
